AFTERCARE
Second Skin
Once your artist has finished the tattoo, they will then clean and disinfect the area and apply second skin. This acts as a barrier to protect your fresh tattoo and keep it clean. We recommend leaving this on for 5-6 days. Your tattoo will be drying and healing underneath the second skin and also avoiding any contaminants that could irritate/ damage the tattoo.
You may experience a build up of fluids underneath the second skin, but this is completely normal and nothing to worry about. It is just excess plasma/ink and it will evaporate after 2-3 days, as the second skin is breathable. Do not remove the wrap early if you see a fluid, you want to ensure the tattoo is covered as this will result in the best heal.
When taking off the second skin, we recommend doing this in the shower. Pull it off with the aid of some running water and then give the tattoo a good clean with antibacterial soap and hot water, dabbing dry with a clean towel or kitchen roll.
By day 5/6 when you take the wrap off, the tattoo will be nice and dry and ready to start applying cream, we recommend a light unscented moisturiser such as Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion, Aveeno or Nivea. Apply a thin layer and rub into the skin 2-3 times a day at the most until the tattoo is fully settled and healed. Over creaming can lead to spots and irritation.
Peeling - when you take the wrap off, the skin will be ready to, or already peeling, similar to sunburn, leave this alone it will fall off naturally. Do not pick at the skin or interrupt it as you could damage the tattoo.
Cling Film
If your artist has used cling film we recommend using a non PVC cling film if possible. Keep the fresh tattoo wrapped up for the remainder of the day and then wash the tattoo before bed. Clean the tattoo with hot water and antibacterial soap, allow to air dry or pat dry with a clean towel/kitchen roll. Do not use any cream. Re-apply cling film once dry to sleep in, repeat in the morning and then the following night.
As cling film is plastic based, it isn’t breathable so you will sweat more, if this is happening then wash and replace the clingfilm during the day, as sweat isn’t good for a fresh tattoo.
After two days of wrapping you can then leave your tattoo unwrapped, still continue to wash and dry twice a day, once the tattoo feels dry you can then start using a very thin layer of light unscented moisturiser such as Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion, rub the cream in until it is all worked into the skin. Do this until the tattoo is fully healed and settled.
If you get any scabs, it is important to allow these to fully dry out. Over moisturising scabs can result in them falling off too soon and potentially losing pigment, let them dry and fall off naturally.
Absorbent Pads
These pads are used to soak up all the blood/plasma and excess ink, commonly used in blackwork tattoos. You want to change these pads in the morning and at night time. Wash the tattoo thoroughly with hot water and antibacterial soap, and sit under the hot water for 2-3 minutes as the hot water will help tighten and close your skin pores. Allow to air dry or dry with a clean fresh towel, once dry re-apply a fresh pad how your artist instructed. Do not use cream during this process. Do this for 2-4 days as your artist recommends. Around day 3-4 your tattoo will be very dry and your tattoo will start to peel, this is normal and you can now start using a light unscented moisturiser such as Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion 1-2 times per day. Leave the flakes alone and let them fall off naturally. Moisturise until fully healed and settled
Ingrowing hairs/ spots / shaving rash is common and likely, leave these areas alone and let them heal naturally.
